Roger Waters est un bassiste et auteur-compositeur britannique, membre fondateur du groupe Pink Floyd. L'album The Final Cut, sorti en 1983, marque l'apogée de la domination de Waters sur le groupe : le dos de l'album indique qu'il s'agit d'un « album de Roger Waters interprété par Pink Floyd ». Nick Mason se fait de plus en plus effacé (il est remplacé par Andy Newmark sur le dernier titre) et Gilmour se querelle de plus en plus fréquemment avec Waters qui refuse toute suggestion artistique. Waters estime alors que le groupe n'a plus de raison d'être. Il le quitte officiellement en 1985 en envoyant une simple lettre recommandée aux membres restants du groupe ainsi qu'à la maison de disques. Lorsque David Gilmour et Nick Mason veulent recommencer à travailler ensemble sous le nom de Pink Floyd, Waters engage des poursuites, refusant qu'ils enregistrent d'autres albums sous ce nom. Il abandonne les poursuites contre 30% des bénéfices générés par les albums et concerts plus les droits exclusifs de l'album The Final Cut et sur les chansons qu'il écrivit seul de l'album The Wall (70%). En 2010, Roger Waters annonce sa dernière tournée mondiale avant sa retraite. Il rebâtira The Wall comme il l'avait déjà fait. Il voulut réunir une dernière fois le groupe, même si la présence de Nick Mason est acquise, celle de David Gilmour l'est beaucoup moins, ce dernier ayant affirmé « ne pas être intéressé ». Trente ans après la sortie de l'album concept "The Wall", chef d'oeuvre absolu des Pink Floyd, Roger Waters entend redonner une seconde vie à cet opéra rock... en concert.
